Job Title: Senior Operations Manager

POSITION SUMMARY:

The Senior Operations Manager is responsible for the efficiency of all manufacturing operations, inventory, and final quality of products, including all processes, planning, and policies for production facilities headquartered in Minnesota and (1) location in Estherville, Iowa.  The Operations Manager will be a key contributor who works within broad guidelines and direction established by the President(s) of each division (EPCO & PDU).  This position will influence (directly or indirectly) areas of the business that will impact improved revenue through operational efficiency.  Requires significant manufacturing, inventory, and operations experience.
 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES:

  • Responsible for promoting a company culture that encourages teamwork, top performance, and high morale.  Must prioritize inspiring and motivating employees to perform at their best through positive encouragement and incentive initiatives.
  • A hands-on leader responsible for working collaboratively with all members of the organization to develop and drive the strategic and operational initiatives and results of our organization in line with the established expectations of ownership to help drive the continued development and success of the company.
  • Responsible for identifying and addressing problems and improvement opportunities in operations and materials.
  • Key leadership role responsible for managing a focused quick-turn custom assembly operation and an operation with a broad line of standard products for stock.   
  • Responsible for making important higher-level strategic decisions within operations and purchasing.
  • Responsible for working with managers to develop, implement, and review operational policies and procedures for continuous improvement.
  • Responsible for business planning and establishing goals and metrics (short and long-term goals) for both operations and materials.
  • Responsible for assessing and analyzing departmental budgets to find ways to minimize expenses and optimize profits.
  • Responsible for communicating high-level priorities and project updates or problems to executive leadership.
  • Responsible for coordinating various teams to foster the exchange of ideas and provide cross-team development and learning opportunities.
  • Responsible for acting as a mentor and key liaison for direct and indirect reports.
  • Responsible for ensuring all legal and regulatory compliance standards and laws are maintained as required in operations, materials/purchasing.  (e.g., U.L., EU, employment laws, safety regulations, etc.)
Initial Key Requirements of the Role:
  • Develop strong, collaborative, cross-functional relationships with all reporting team members.
  • Work collaboratively with all team members in the company to cultivate a culture that encourages attaining organizational goals and metrics.
  • Learn the business model, product, culture, and current strategic vision.
  • Assess the current operations and strategies; provide assessments and actionable goals and initiatives for improvement.  Requires working collaboratively with the purchasing manager, warehouse supervisor, production supervisors, engineers, and program manager.
  • Heavy focus on assessing supply chain-related processes and supporting the purchasing & materials in the beginning.  Responsible for assessing the materials and purchasing department to establish and support initiatives for improvement.
  • Iowa Facility (28,000 sq. ft) – Responsible for working with the Program Manager, leads, and management to assess and continue to build the operation’s infrastructure with a focus on improvements that will support and sustain growth at the facility.  (This will require traveling to the facility).
  • Act as a mentor and leader for supervisors, leads, and managers.  Assist with establishing career and skill development plans.
  • Evaluate the existing talent within the business – provide insights to the executive leadership team.
  • Work with the team to assess assigned metrics.  Develop new metrics as needed in alignment with strategic plans and goals. 

JOB KNOWLEDGE, ABILITIES, AND SKILLS:

  • Significant experience managing processes and employees in the areas of supply chain, purchasing, quality, product development, operations, warehouse, and engineering.
  • Proven leadership skills in a production/manufacturing environment
  • Ability to successfully manage an operation that grows an average of 12-14 million dollars YOY.
  • Able to work with presidents and managers (direct reports) to develop and help drive strategic operations goals and establish key initiatives as the company continues its projected growth and development.
  • Responsible for providing senior management with data and recommendations to make effective decisions regarding the optimum utilization of people, materials, equipment, facilities, and resources.
  • Able to develop and execute strategies aligned with the business’ priorities, profitability goals, metrics, and ownership expectations.
  • Strategic stakeholder responsible for developing long-term improvement plans focusing on continual improvement and growth in assigned departments.
  • Ability to multi-task, facilitate, allocate, and manage higher-level endeavors while developing direct reports to manage day-to-day demands.
  • Able to oversee multiple locations (MN and Iowa)
  • Ability to implement successful operations strategies and initiatives that result in bottom-line revenue growth, and team development, while supporting company culture and ownership expectations.  
  • Results-driven strategic problem-solver that can determine areas of opportunity and develop action plans that involve a collaborative approach and positive outcome.
  • A detailed understanding of manufacturing, production, and material flow is required.
  • Prior higher-level business and operations planning experience, including budgets, labor, and equipment.
  • Previous Inventory management experience and an understanding of inventory processes are required.
  • ERP/MRP experience
  • Higher level computer skills/competencies in Microsoft Office Suites.
  • Excellent verbal, written, interpersonal, and presentation skills.
  • Strong project management and analytical abilities
  • Technical acumen
  • Able to work in uncharted, unforeseen, or complex areas.  Capable of integrating large amounts of information to address complex issues.
  • Able to quickly establish rapport/trust and maintain quality interpersonal relationships across all levels of the organization.  Creates team atmosphere while achieving goals and metrics.
  • Able to provide a good balance of risk-taking and judgment.
  • Able to operate independently.  Manages time well, follows through on commitments, and pays attention to details.  Able to work on several projects simultaneously.
  • Able to serve as a key strategic partner with the senior leadership team.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

  • A bachelor’s degree in Business Management, Logistics, Manufacturing, or equivalent work experience is preferred.
  • Minimum of 10 years of high-level leadership experience, preferably succeeding through the operations function in a production/manufacturing organization.
  • 3-5 Years of experience managing more than (1) location
  • A minimum of 5 years of experience with inventory, operations, and manufacturing experience.
  • Lean manufacturing certification
  • Mid-size growth organization experience

All positions require working well with more than one department and individuals in various roles and working well independently to complete the essential functions required.
 
This position must be able to function working both in an office environment and in a warehouse/production facility:
 
  • OFFICE POSITIONS:
    • Work will be performed in a business casual office setting where separate workstations/cubes or offices are set up for employees working in the office area.
    • Must work in a team environment and perform duties that may require more than one employee’s participation to complete the task.
    • Will also be required to work well independently and with minimal supervision.
  • WAREHOUSE AND PRODUCTION POSITIONS:
    • Work will be performed in a warehouse/plant-type environment where temperatures may fluctuate.
    • Responsibilities may require performing duties outside the warehouse, but exposure to severe weather and extreme conditions will be minimal.
    • Must effectively work in a team environment and perform duties that may require more than one employee’s participation to complete the task.
    • Will also be required to work well independently and with minimal supervision.
